Biography
General Sir Arthur James Lyon Fremantle was born on November 11, He was the son of Major General John Fremantle and Agnes Lyon.
After graduating from Sandhurst, Great Britain’s West Point, Arthur Fremantle entered the army in and soon became an officer in England’s renowned Coldstream Guards (both his father and grandfather had served with distinction in the same regiment). In , at the age of 25, Fremantle was promoted to lieutenant colonel. After meeting a Confederate officer when he held the office of Governor of Malta in , Arthur became interested in the American Civil War and, in early , was allowed to cross the Atlantic to witness America's epic struggle.
He sailed on the HMS Immortalité and was put ashore in Mexico to avoid being in violation of the Union blockade.
He crossed the Rio Grande into Brownsville, Texas and spent the next three months visiting every Southern state except Arkansas and Florida. Within those three months he met most of the top Confederate leaders in both the Eastern and Western theaters. He had the opportunity to meet Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, Joseph Johnston and Jefferson Davis, to name a few.
But by no means did Fremantle limit himself to the leading figures; he befriended a gamut of men and women from all walks of life, and left behind an excellent account of the common soldier and the fiery Southern womenfolk on the home front.

His exploits in America brought much interest in England, so much so that he was encouraged to write a memoir about it. His book "Three Months in the Southern States", published in , became a best seller in both England and America.
In , Fremantle's book was republished by Walter Lord under the title "The Fremantle Diary: Being the Journal of Lieutenant Colonel Arthur James Lyon Fremantle, Coldstream Guards, on His Three Months in the Southern States". (Boston: Little, Brown and Company).
